New York City’s 1st Utility-Owned Battery Energy Storage System

With sub-transmission feeders being overloaded by its Ozone Park, Brooklyn, customers, Con Edison avoided a $250 million new substation by constructing its first utility-owned storage project. RRT SIGMA, teamed with RES Americas, designed the 2 MW/12 MWh battery energy storage facility meeting all regulatory requirements and local approvals. In the highly congested area, RRT configured and fully integrated eight storage containers and the power conditioning systems container between a school, church and adjacent elevated MTA rail lines – presenting unique challenges which were successfully addressed.
